At "Making Vinyl, Nashville", A Last Minute On-Stage Interview with Singer/Songwriter Raul Midón
The plan was an on-stage interview with Patrick Leonard, whose new double LP album "It's All Comes Down To Mood" is due end of July. Patrick produced all of Madonna's early Warner Brothers Records, "Amused to Death" for Roger Waters, two of the final three Leonard Cohen records (he wrote or co-wrote songs on all three), as well as Elton John's "Songs From the West Coast".
There's more but that's enough! I wrote an essay published in the "Making Vinyl" show guide about Patrick's breaking free on his new album from his usual collaborative role and going "solo" with help from bassist Tony Levin Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Wendy Melvoin and other musical greats/friends.
But something came up an...

Would you like to attend a recording session at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary Englewood Cliffs studio featuring saxophone great Joe Lovano? Of course you would! I was lucky enough to attend one-the only invited journalist-last May 19th, four days after returning from Switzerland following High End 2024. Here's the story. The old audiophile riddle "How do you make $1,000,000 in the audio business?...
Wilson-Benesch's 370K GMT One Turntable System Delivers David Bowie's "Fashion"- U.K. Townhouse Cut.

125,000 views of Steely Dan's "Gaucho" played back on Wilson-Benesch's GMT One turntable made clear that people enjoy listening to top quality vinyl playback, even degraded as it is by RUclips's meh bit rate audio. So here's another one: David Bowie's "Fashion" from his 1980 album "Scary Monsters, Super Creeps" from an original U.K. Townhouse mastered pressing. The record is not a "minty" copy ...

    Thank you Michael, and all the panelists. Very informative, and left me feeling very positive. Haven't seen this much brainpower focussed on improving vinyl since the late 1970s. In the early '80s, the younger engineers were pouring their time and ingenuity into the digital realm, and vinyl stagnated, and a lot of know-how vanished (retired/died/switched fields). Now we're seeing smart young engineers armed with the latest in material science and computer analysis -- leaps and bounds beyond what was available when, say, Oracle released their Delphi turntable in 1979 -- digging into these hard problems. Bravo!

    Michael, I took about a five year break from buying any new vinyl pressings. WTF has happened to the quality control at companies that I used to have very good luck with like RTI and QRP? I'm getting a lot more issues recently and the sample size is pretty large. Would love it if you could get some explication from these companies for us. Thanks!

      Keeping a speaker slender, free of flat surfaces and edges, that inevitably causes diffraction attracting subconscious attention to the speaker, is important to achieve a wide sound dispersion pattern uniform with direct sound. Room treatment is often to limit the 'bad' off-axis sound being reflected from side walls. Unfortunately less reflected good sound limits the illusion of a wide and deep soundstage, where instruments etc. are perceived in 3D space locations.

I knw already then as young man that tapes ages - some within in a couple year , some brands more .Iassume the digitallisation are nessesary to preserve the sound from analog -the early you do that the better. The audiophile paradox, We spend 10's of thousands of $'s over years for just the right turntable, arm, cart,. then cables, amps, preamps and speakers in pursuit of the most perfect sound reproduction. All the while our ears deteriorate and then we croak. To which we archived some degree of bragging rights but often to those who will never understand the passion.

    The higher sampling rates does something different in your brain, the higher the rate , the more it makes you want to listen no matter if you think you can hear the difference or not! To me the higher the sampling and bit rate , the more 3 dimensional it is! With pure analog like LPs it's pure amazing! Thanks for the video, I enjoyed the performance!😊

    His insights into why CD sounded 'better' than vinyl in the 80's was spot on. Convenience killed vinyl, not poor sound. Mediocre turntables were the issue too- trying to make things cheap for more profit. Analog and Digital now sound great in their own ways. (Be curious, not judgmental.) Raul's new album will be amazing! I loved the first song and look forward to the album!

    When I bought my first CDP ..I was so shocked and deceived by the sound that I compared all the CD's to my vinyl ..........I couldn't live with this new thing, I could not understand what there was claimed to be the perfect sound of music ! In fact this was horror instead of music..........at that time... So I sold it after only a few days to my neighbor who was trilled to buy a Philips CD 16 Bit/4 x oversampling CDP at a fair and reduced price....as the result od ths experience I bought all vinyl that I could find at reduced prices , shops were getting rid of the stock, some Blue notes about fifty albums sold for 5 $/euro a piece........glad I did that and no regrets ever since.

    I wonder why these videos so often actually fail to deliver. This example has largely similar faults as the Steely Dan track. Midrange is cardboard-like and 'splashy' for lack of a better word. This is also very heavily distorted - could be the track being the innermost groove of the side. No true music lover should settle for that. The streaming version absolutely wipes the floor with this. What gives?

      @papabear1417 9 дней назад

      370k doesn't mean it's an outstanding player. It's the more expensive must be better mindset. It's not. There are many variables from groove to the ear. The biggest is the carbon - based lifeform listening.

Some things more than others, the thing is just because its more expensive does not mean it will sound better so if sound is what you care about the most dont get too carried away with features and looks.
